Murals drape the walls of the Dambulla Cave Temples. The Temptation of the Buddha. Himalyan landscapes. Celestial war. The thousand Buddha sequence. Red, yellow and black, they depict countless Buddhist stories in a variety of styles, as they were painted over the course of 200 years. Statues of the Buddha recline, meditate and teach throughout each of the five caves.
From Amaya Lake, the Cave Temples are only a brief journey – a fifteen minute drive followed by a half-hour hike up the sloping hill.
