If you are passionate about cool, crisp breezes and magnificent views, this is the place you must include in your travel itinerary… If you plan to visit Ambewela, it’s better to check whether the farm is open to visitors on that particular day, since they close it down for long periods of time.

The farm lies 20 km away from Nuwara Eliya – it’s only a 45 minute drive from the Nuwara Eliya town, and about an hour away from our Oliphant Bungalows in Nuwara Eliya. The drive is pleasant, passing through vegetable farms, lakes and forests, and you will be able to refresh your eyes. On the way, you will pass Kande Ela, another cool calm place which will keep you enchanted.

Ambewela is a small town which gained popularity for its two dairy farms called “Ambewela Farm” and “New Zealand Farm”. The lush grasslands of Ambewela lie 6,064 ft (1,848 m) above sea level. The maximum temperature of this area is about 23° C and the lowest goes down to about 9° C.

The Ambewela farm was started by the British about 80 years ago, while the New Zealand farm was started in 1960. Both farms are managed by Ambewela Farm. Ambewela farm is not open for visitors, but the New Zealand farm can be viewed by paying a small price. The entrance ticket to the farm is Rs 100/- per person.

This is becoming a popular destination for visitors of Nuwara Eliya, especially those who love an unusual experience away from frequently-visited tourist destinations.

This farm spreads over 1,500 acres of wonderful grasslands with lush greenery as far as the eye can see and the view is dotted with cows giving you a refreshing feeling.

Once inside, don’t be amazed if you start feeling like you are in a remote town of Scotland. Not only does the weather and environment look totally foreign to tropical Sri Lanka, the little cottages of the staff, green meadows and European cows complete the picture.

The farm is open for visitors throughout the year from 9 am – 6pm (unless closed due to any reason). There is a small outlet at the entrance from where you can buy the products of the farm including a warm glass of milk and cheese.

Stay at our bungalows in Nuwara Eliya and arrange an excursion to visit Ambewela Farms.
