Wadduwa is a charming little town in the Western Province of Sri Lanka which can be reached after one hour’s drive from Colombo. Owing to the ideal location, a visitor to Wadduwa gets the opportunity to indulge in many actives in surrounding areas.
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Centre is a nice and unusual place where you can touch and hold sea turtles. They have tiny sweet baby turtles and huge ones.
Kosgoda is well known for its sea turtle conservation project controlled by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1988 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction; since then it is said to have released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the sea.
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Center program aims to protect sea turtle eggs and increase hatching rates. Some of its staff patrol the beach all night looking for mother turtles that come out of the ocean to lay their eggs. They protect the mother turtle during the nesting process and when she is finished laying the eggs and safely back in the ocean, they relocate the eggs from the beach to the hatchery.
The hatchery also pays fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sandy beach. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year.
The hatchery buries the eggs in sand, and when they hatch around 50 days later, the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles survive to maturity.
Kosgoda turtle hatchery also has tanks for injured or disabled turtles that would not survive in the harsh sea.
You will love every minute of the visit to the Turtle Conservation and you will develop a big respect for the people working there. Of course you can spend time just looking at all the baby turtles and it is also very interesting to hear about the other turtles and how they have been rescued. The fee is really low, and if you are willing, you can give a donation as it really is a good cause.
The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is located less than 90mins away from The Villas, one of our hotels in Wadduwa.
