Ritigala is a monastery wrapped up in legends and myths. It’s also distinguished for its exceptional greenery. Some of the herbal plants found there can’t be found any where else in Sri Lanka. According to folklore, they are plants which are only found in certain parts of India. It’s also the highest point in the North-central region, and has a cooler climate than in other areas of the region.
Ritigala is located 43km from Anuradhapura. It comprises of an ancient Buddhist monastery and ruins around it indicate the lifestyle of ancient monks who meditated in the natural environment. The area is also known for elephants who frequently come out in the night.
At the foot of the Ritigala Rock are the ruins of a pond, from which a stone stairway leads to the different sites within the mountain. The untouchable solitude of the Ritigala Monastery still passes through the air. Visitors are allowed there only with special permission.
