Pidurangala is a massive rock formation which offers spectacular views of magnificent greenery. The summit of Pidurangala is also the best place possible to get a fantastic view of the Sigiriya rock fortress. Pidurangala was formed by volcanic activity. Pidurangala appears larger than Sigiriya and its upper surface is steeply sloped.
When you reach the summit of Pidurangala, a most spectacular view await you. A vast area of flat rock stretched out before you, a small bunch of trees and shrubs huddled at its center. It will make you feel as though you are on the top of the world. It is one of the best places to get the most amazing sunset views. When you wander around, you will see brilliantly-coloured lizards. Below, you will see a thick cloud of mist hanging over the black forest. Pidurangala is indeed a natural wonder.
You will also see a monastery which dates back to the third century BC. Under King Kasyapa the monastery became developed. It’s said the monastery was home to 500 monks and occupied an area of 14 acres during his reign.
The temple is still there today, and open to visitors. But Pidurangala is not just a temple. It is more famous for being right next to Sigiriya and offering a stunning views of the surrounding area.
