Diabetes is one of the most common health problems in the world. Wrong life styles block your body’s natural ability to respond to Insulin. This will eventually lead to deviations in metabolism leading to elevated blood sugar levels. According to Ayurveda there are 20 forms of diabetes. 4 due to ‘vatha’, 6 from ‘pitha’ and 10 from ‘kappa’. All forms of these, if left untreated, will end up as a condition called ‘madumehaya’ (Diabetes Mellitus).

There are several wrong habits causing an increase of ‘kapha dosha’ such as over consumption of sugar, fats & carbohydrates, lack of physical activities, mental stress and strain, etc. Some lifestyle changes can help you maintain and regulate sugar. Ayurveda too suggests a few easy life style changes and some remedies that help manage diabetes and keep the blood sugar levels under control. As part of every treatment, western or native, importance of avoiding excess intake of sugar and carbohydrates is stressed.

Diet planning is the most important thing in managing diabetes. The diabetic diet is not too hard to follow with a little determination and self-control as that too is a normal balanced diet. As per Ayurvedic lifestyle, following types of food may be taken and permitted.  These wholesome foods are bitter gourd, snake gourd, turmeric, drumstick, barley, wheat, green gram, pepper, garlic, blueberry, soybean, cucumber, spinach, fenugreek seeds, etc. Some green leaves such as ‘Thebu’ and ‘Kowakka’ are also very effective in lowering sugar levels. Bitter Gourd Juice is another very effective home remedy for blood sugar lowering. It may be taken on empty stomach daily in the early morning.

‘Triphala’ , which is widely sold in Sri Lanka, is believed to be a good cure for sugar control. ‘Triphala’ along with other ingredients are very useful in lowering the sugar levels in blood.  Many other effective traditional Ayurveda medicines are used by Ayurveda doctors in Sri Lanka.

There are some foods which are prohibited from an Ayurveda point of view.  The list of such food items are, sugar, sweet drinks , ghee, oil, cakes, jaggery, alcohol, food rich in carbohydrate, curd, junk food, butter, puddings, biscuits and many more. Ginger tea, widely consumed in Sri Lanka, helps stimulate digestion that is beneficial in reducing the excess ‘kapha’ in your system.

One of the methods to heal this decease includes regular exercises. Regular exercise in any form is a must. Some Yoga “asana” are effective in reducing weight and stress thus causing a drop in blood sugar.

These natural and Ayurveda remedies help in effective control of Diabetes. The greatest advantage of these herbal diabetes medicine supplements is that they have no side effects.
