The city of Anuradhapura was once known as the center of Theravada Buddhism. It is historically very significant and was once the capital of Sri Lanka. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi -the ancient Bo Tree is from the southern branch of the tree under which Lord Buddha attained Nibbana. It is also the longest living tree that is known to mankind. Ruwanwelisaya- with the most number of relics of Lord Buddha inside – Thuparama, Mirisavetiya, Abhayagiriya, Lankarama and Jetavanarama are among the stupas you can visit when in Anuradharapura.
