The ruins of the Royal Palace is one of the main attractions. It is said that the palace used to be seven stories high. The Gal Viharaya has magnificent Buddha statues that have been carved from granite with so much precision. The Vatadage which is situated in the quadrangle is said to have been the home to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. It was said to be built by King Parakramabahu I and later renovated by King Nissanka Malla. All the ruins of what must have once been magnificent structures show that the ancient Sri Lankan folk had the genius and the craftsmanship that is possibly unrivaled even back in the times when technology was not prominent.
Polonnaruwa is considered a city with great cultural value as well as religious value. It is advised that you be dressed in modest clothing when visiting Polonnaruwa.
