If you love serenity and silence you will be thrilled to be in this calm place. Kaludiya Pokuna, is a forest in Kandalama and this beautiful place is ideal for a nature trek and to see ancient ruins which lay inside the forest.

The forest is home for many endemic and non-endemic species of flora and fauna, and as you stroll further into the forest, you can feel a deep calmness with greenery enveloping you. This site will immensely excite birdwatchers as it is also a bird’s paradise with about 120 species of birds.

Accompanied by a guide you can take a vehicle to the edge of the forest and then continue your journey on foot, following footpaths. You will come upon a ‘Dagaba’ that is 1200 years old, along with a collection of strange, striking rocks extending out of the earth. There is a cave which carries an inscription of medieval text, believed to have been written to mark directions to unearth a treasure.

The name “Kaludiya Pokuna” is given because of a pond in the vicinity which had dark water during ancient times. In addition to birds the forest is home to many species of butterflies, reptiles and mammals.
