This World Honey Bee Day, we celebrate a meaningful beekeeping initiative that has become an important part of the natural landscape at Amaya Hills, Kandy.
The journey began in 2021 with four bee colonies. When only one survived, our horticulture team continued to learn, adapt and strengthen its apiary knowledge. Three new colonies were introduced in 2025, and by 2026, seven thriving, actively managed colonies had become part of the resort gardens.
Today, these colonies provide a protected environment for bees to thrive while supporting pollination across our gardens and the surrounding greenery of Heerassagala. In doing so, they contribute to the biodiversity of the Kandy hills, while producing fresh honey that is harvested on-site, used in our main kitchen and offered as a welcome-room amenity.
Guests can also discover the process first-hand through our dedicated honey-harvesting experience, learning how the colonies are cared for, why healthy bee populations are essential to plant life and ecosystems, and how honey makes its journey from hive to harvest before tasting it for themselves.
This World Honey Bee Day, we celebrate the bees, the people who nurture them and a five-year journey that continues to create a meaningful connection between conservation, hospitality and the guest experience at Amaya Hills.
