Built by King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era (1357 A.D. to 1374 A.D.), the Embekka Devalaya is a place of unique beauty in Kandy. The temple which is dedicated to the Kataragama deviyo consists of three sections namely, the “Sanctum of Garagha”, the “Dancing Hall” and the “Drummers’ Hall”. The Drummers’ Hall has magnificent wood carvings adorning its pillars and high pitched roof. These stunning wood carvings in Sri Lanka silently and ceaselessly attest to the grandeur and the excellence of the olden days.
