Peradeniya Gardens

The oldest formal gardens in Sri Lanka with over 4000 plant species

Located in Kandy’s suburbs of Peradeniya, this spectacular garden displays over 4000 different species of plants. The scenic splendor of this garden with the border of the Mahaweli river that flows around its fringes has been a prime attraction for many years.

The iconic Peradeniya Gardens was established somewhere in the 1820’s, but its history dates back to the 14th century. Famous for its splendid collection of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees, the gardens also nurture over 80 species of birds, 10 of which are endemic, over 80 types of butterflies, 20 kinds of reptiles, 15 kinds of amphibians and 18 types of mammals, making it a true treasure trove to ardent lovers of nature.

Stroll along the exquisite Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy, and wander through the spectacular orchid collection and avenues of palm trees. A visit can take up to 3 hours, but it is well worth your time.
